Description
Celebrating stories, language, music, and connection to Country
This powerful performance unites the voices and cultures of two First Nations communities—Gimuy/Cairns and Lutruwita/Tasmania—to celebrate story, language, music, and place.
The Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir, based in Gimuy/Cairns, is one of Australia's most celebrated youth ensembles. Under the direction of Lyn Williams AM, the choir is known for its vibrant sound and commitment to new choral works in First Nations languages, developed alongside cultural custodians. During this performance, live songs will be paired with evocative films shot on Country, deepening the connection between music, stories, and place.
"The aim is to show the relationship between stories, language, music, and Country, celebrating this proud First Nation culture. " — Lyn Williams AM
For many of these young performers, it will be their first visit to Tasmania—making this moment even more meaningful. A few are also members of Marliya, the choir's acclaimed 'big sister' ensemble, who wowed audiences at Festival of Voices 2024 with Spinifex Gum.
The concert also features Lutruwita's own Madam pakana – DENNI. A proud truwulway woman and multidisciplinary artist, DENNI is known for her bold sound and powerful storytelling. She'll share original songs and collaborate with the choir on stage.
Songs of Country is more than a concert—it's a celebration of culture, resilience, and deep connection to Country.
