Where a rebellion helped shape Australian democracy
Victoria's gold rush left this region wealthier and stranger than almost anywhere else in the state, grand boulevards and architecture built on fortunes pulled from the ground. Ballarat holds the deepest history of all, Sovereign Hill recreating an entire 1850s mining town while the nearby Eureka Stockade site marks one of the most significant uprisings in Australian democratic history. Bendigo carries its own story through the Golden Dragon Museum, generations of Chinese-Australian heritage that shaped the goldfields as much as any digger did.
