A steam train still climbing through some of the tallest trees on Earth
This region climbs from vineyard valleys into forest tall enough to feel like another world entirely, all within the same short drive from Melbourne. Puffing Billy has carried visitors through those forests since 1900, a heritage steam train winding past mountain ash ranked among the largest flowering trees on Earth. The Yarra Valley spreads out below with more than 80 cellar doors scattered through vineyard country. Somewhere between the vines and the treetops, this region found its own perfect pace.
