Balonne Area

St George sits where the Balonne River widens out, and the fishing here is genuinely excellent, cod and yellowbelly drawing anglers from well beyond the district. Beardmore Dam backs up the same river into a proper lake, good for boating and water skiing when the fishing slows down. Out at Nindigully, one of Queensland's oldest continuously licensed pubs has been standing since the 1860s, weatherboard and character intact. Around it all, citrus groves and cotton fields stretch out in neat rows, a different kind of outback to the red dirt further west. Out here, the river does most of the work.
