Home to Australia's oldest surviving German settlement
Some towns manage to hold onto their founding spirit for a generation or two before it fades. Hahndorf has kept it for nearly two hundred years, timber-framed buildings and a main street still standing much as German settlers first built them in the 1830s. Stirling turns properly golden each autumn, garden village streets lined with European trees that colour the whole town for weeks. This stretch of hills feels like a different season to the city below.
