Banana Area
Named after a bullock, not a fruit
There's no banana tree anywhere near Banana. The town takes its name from a working bullock, favoured by stockmen for his skill herding wild cattle in the 1860s, and when he died, the gully he'd worked was named in his honour. A life-sized replica of Banana still stands in town, a small, genuinely charming tribute. Sitting at the junction of two highways, it's also a natural stopping point on the way to the rest of the shire.
