In 1916, a catastrophic flood tore through the original Clermont, killing dozens and forcing survivors to rebuild their whole town on higher ground, a piano mounted high on a pole still marking the waterline today. Cast a line, launch a boat or pitch a tent at Lake Nuggan, a genuine favourite for a weekend away from anywhere. Ride or drive through cattle country stretching to the horizon in every direction, coal country history running underneath all of it. Out here, the ground itself remembers what happened, and there's still plenty of reason to stick around.
