Blackall Area

The shearer who broke a record that stood for almost sixty years

In 1892, Jack Howe shore 321 sheep in under eight hours, a record so far ahead of its time it stood for nearly six decades. The Historic Blackall Woolscour backs up the claim, the last steam-powered wool-washing plant of its kind in Australia. Soak afterwards in the naturally heated waters of the Artesian Aquatic Centre, drawn from the bore Blackall drilled in 1885, the first in outback Queensland. Just out of town, the actual Black Stump still marks the spot the old phrase was named for. Out here, a few good stories go a long way.
