Bulloo Area

One of the first places on Earth lit by hydro-electric power

Thargomindah drilled its own artesian bore in the 1890s and used the hot water pressure to generate electricity, lighting its streets years before many major cities managed the same feat. The bore still runs today, hot mineral water drawn from deep underground for a proper outback soak. Out at Noccundra, a single pub on the Wilson River marks one of the quietest, most remote stops in the state, good for fishing and even quieter conversation. Around it all, Channel Country stretches to every horizon, dry most of the year and startling green after rain. Out here, even the middle of nowhere has its own glow.
