Tucked into Queensland's remote Gulf country, Burke Shire holds more strange spectacle than its tiny population suggests. Each spring, the rare Morning Glory cloud rolls in over Burketown, a single vast tube of cloud that glider pilots travel from across the world to fly. Cast a line for barramundi in one of the three rivers crossing the shire, or balloon over Australia's largest saltpan for a view like nowhere else. Birdwatchers gather at the Burketown hot springs for the warm water and the quiet. Out here, after dark, even the tranquillity has its own glow.
