Carpentaria Area

The largest crocodile ever recorded in Australia, replicated life-size in the town square

The Carpentaria wears its Gulf-country toughness proudly, and nothing proves it better than the giant fibreglass replica of Krys, the largest crocodile ever officially measured in the country, standing in the middle of Normanton. The historic Gulflander train still runs its slow, strange route between here and Croydon, one of the last services of its kind anywhere. At Karumba, the fishing runs to some of the best barramundi in Australia, and the sunset does something most Australian coastal towns can't manage, setting directly out over open water. This is genuine Gulf of Carpentaria country, remote, hot, and entirely its own kind of beautiful.
