Cherbourg Area

A community's own history, told in its own words

Cherbourg is one of Queensland's largest Aboriginal communities, established in the early twentieth century as the state's oldest and largest former government settlement, home today mainly to Wakka Wakka and Gubbi Gubbi people. Start at the Visitor Information Centre above Lake Barambah, where local art and craft sit alongside genuine picnic views over the water. The Ration Shed Museum tells the fuller story, archival footage and recorded conversations with community Elders sharing the experience and resilience of life here, past and present. Cherbourg welcomes visitors who come to listen as much as to look.
