An island shaped as much by its ocean as its rainforest
Christmas Island sits closer to Indonesia than to mainland Australia, a genuinely remote speck where rainforest, reef and open ocean all meet within a few kilometres of each other. Dolly Beach rewards a proper hike through the forest, remote sand with barely anyone else in sight once you arrive. The surrounding water runs exceptionally clear, turtles and reef life easy to spot on a snorkel or dive most days of the year. The island's Chinese, Malay and European communities have shaped its culture for generations, a genuine mix found almost nowhere else in the country.
