Cobar

A hole in the ground big enough to hold a town's whole story

Cobar built itself on copper, and the evidence is a literal canyon: stand at the open-cut mine's edge from the Great Cobar Heritage Centre, once a mine manager's grand residence, and take in a hole dug deep enough to swallow the town. Wander streets of Federation-era buildings raised on that same mining wealth, and climb Fort Bourke Hill for a lookout over the whole operation. Mount Grenfell holds something older and quieter an hour west, ochre stencils and engravings left by Ngiyampaa people in rock shelters worth the drive alone.
