Croydon Area

A whole gold-rush town, still standing and free to walk through

Gold turned up here in 1885, and Croydon's Heritage Precinct still holds the proof: the old police station, jail, courthouse and town hall, all open and free to wander. The Mining Museum keeps a working stamper on the original mine site, still crushing ore as it did a century ago. Archaeologists have rediscovered the site of the town's Chinese temple, a mark of the large Chinese community that once called Croydon home. Ride the Gulflander, a rare heritage train that still runs weekly from Normanton, or cast a line at Lake Belmore for barramundi all year round.
