The end of the Birdsville Track, and the edge of a whole desert
Birdsville sits at one end of the legendary Birdsville Track, and just out of town, the dune known as Big Red marks the true edge of the Simpson Desert. The Birdsville Hotel has been the town's heart since the 1880s, standing through droughts and generations of drovers. At Bedourie, the shire's other town, the original camp oven design has been standard bush kitchen equipment for well over a century. Time it right and the Races bring the whole Channel Country to town at once.
