District Council of Coober Pedy

A town where most people live underground to escape the heat

Some towns build up, and some build sideways into a hill. Coober Pedy did the latter, homes, churches and even hotels carved into the hillsides to escape summer heat that regularly tops 40 degrees. The town produces most of the world's opal supply, and fossicking here is genuine, real stones still turning up in the mullock heaps. This town solved its biggest problem by going down instead of up.
