A striped obelisk mistaken for a lighthouse by almost everyone who sees it
Almost everyone gets this one wrong at first glance. The Cape Dombey Obelisk stands bold red and white over the town, built as a navigation marker rather than an actual lighthouse. Robe itself dates to the 1840s, one of South Australia's oldest towns, its history tied to the thousands of Chinese immigrants who once landed here to walk overland to the Victorian goldfields. This town has always had one foot in the past and one on the water.
