District Council of Streaky Bay

Named by Matthew Flinders for streaks he saw in the water, and still living up to it

Not every town's name still makes sense two centuries later, but this one does. Matthew Flinders spotted odd streaks across the bay from his ship and named it accordingly, a detail still visible on the right kind of day. The jetty stretches out long and quiet over calm turquoise water, popular with anglers casting for whiting and squid straight off the end. Cape Bauer offers a wilder version of the same coast further out, a genuine blowhole forcing water skyward through the rock. This town has always taken its cues from the sea around it.
