Goldfields

A whole town classified by the National Trust, unchanged since the boom

This region holds more perfectly preserved gold rush towns than almost anywhere in the country, streets and buildings surviving intact long after the gold itself ran out. Maldon was the first town in Australia classified in its entirety by the National Trust, its main street barely changed since the 1850s. Castlemaine keeps a similar heritage streetscape but with a genuinely thriving contemporary arts scene layered on top of it. Central Deborah Gold Mine in Bendigo takes visitors underground into real mining tunnels, a proper look at how the boom actually worked.
