Goondiwindi Area

Goondiwindi takes its name from the Aboriginal word Goonawinna, said to mean the resting place of the birds, and the Macintyre River still draws them to its banks today. That same river marks the line between Queensland and New South Wales, giving the town a genuine border-country identity at the junction of five highways. Each spring, jacaranda trees burst into purple bloom along the streets, turning the whole town the same colour for a few short weeks. Photographers come for the heritage buildings and the river frontage as much as the flowers. Out here, even the name asks you to slow down.
