Herberton Area

Home to Australia's only Spy and Camera Museum

Herberton earns its nickname, the town of museums, honestly, with more than sixty heritage buildings at Herberton Historic Village and, oddly enough, the country's only museum dedicated to spies and cameras. The town itself is the oldest on the Atherton Tablelands, tin-mining heritage still visible in its wide-verandahed houses and heritage-listed streets. Walk through the old Great Northern Mine site, restored machinery sheds leading out to fire trails popular with bushwalkers and mountain bikers. Sitting almost a thousand metres up, Herberton runs cooler and drier than the coast, frosty enough some winters that its jacaranda and golden wattle seasons feel like a genuine reward.
