Isaac Area

Coal country, cattle country, and a lake in between

This inland stretch of Central Queensland runs on the Bowen Basin, one of the largest coal-producing regions in the country, but it holds a few surprises too. Near Middlemount, a hidden waterfall spills into a calm, deep pool perfect for a swim on a hot day, tucked away from the roads and mine sites. Lake Elphinstone offers the same relief further along, good for fishing, water skiing or a weekend of camping. Moranbah and Dysart keep the district's working character honest, mining towns built for the job rather than the view. Out here, the industry is real, and so is the quiet once you find it.
