South Australia's very first successful mine, still marked in the streets of Kapunda

Long before the Barossa became famous for wine, this district was already saving the colony's finances. Kapunda's copper mine, discovered in 1842, was South Australia's first successful one, helping keep the fledgling colony afloat. A striking statue of a Cornish miner still stands over the town, a tribute to the thousands who came from Cornwall to work the mines here. This district has always done its best work quietly.
