Roma's saleyards rank among the largest cattle selling centres anywhere south of the equator, the real economic heart of a district built on cattle and oil. Just up the road, the Avenue of Heroes holds a bottle tree for every local soldier killed in the First World War, still lining the town's main street today. The Big Rig tells the region's other story, oil discovered here in the 1900s and marked now by a heritage derrick and light show. Further out, Mitchell keeps its own artesian hot springs. Out here, even the trees remember something.
