New South Wales
Moree & Narrabri
Hot springs, pink slugs and a wall of stone organ pipes
This corner of the north-west deals in the unexpected. Moree's artesian waters have been easing muscles since 1895, and the town above holds art deco streets alongside one of regional Australia's great Aboriginal art collections at BAMM. Head east to Narrabri, where Mount Kaputar rises off the plains with summit views over a tenth of the state, and after rain, giant fluorescent-pink slugs found nowhere else on Earth. Sawn Rocks stands below like a cathedral organ carved in basalt. Some corners of this state just refuse to be ordinary.
