Watch the sun go down over the vines, and you'll understand

Mudgee's hills roll gently enough that a glass of something local and a good sunset feel like the whole point of stopping here, vineyards catching the last light in every direction. Down at street level, the whole town centre is heritage-listed, ornate pubs and churches lining a history walk that follows the Cudgegong through the parklands. Save an afternoon for Gulgong nearby, the gold-rush town so perfectly preserved it appeared on the ten-dollar note. Some places age well. Mudgee barely aged at all.
