Orange

The city on the side of a volcano

Everything about Orange traces back to Mount Canobolas, the extinct volcano on its doorstep and the highest point from the Blue Mountains to the Indian Ocean. The mountain gave the town its altitude, its four honest seasons, and the autumn blaze that fills Cook Park's 1873 gardens every April. Climb Canobolas for hundred-kilometre views and the walk to Federal Falls, swim at the lake on its flank, then fossick at Ophir, where Australia's first payable gold turned up in 1851 and started everything. Four seasons, one mountain, endless reasons.
