South Australia

Pastrol Unincorporated Area

The largest salt lake in the country, usually dry, occasionally an inland sea

This is the emptiest stretch of South Australia by far, land so vast and unpopulated it has no local council at all, just outback towns and stations scattered across the map. Lake Eyre anchors it as the largest salt lake in the country, usually a blinding white expanse that occasionally fills into a genuine inland sea after rare inland rains. Coober Pedy solved its own heat problem by building underground, entire homes, churches and shops carved straight into the hillside. Out here, the emptiness is the whole point.
