Pilbara

A million rock engravings, some older than the pyramids by tens of thousands of years

This is a landscape that holds two kinds of history at once, the Burrup Peninsula's rock engravings, more than a million of them, some dating back 30,000 years. Karijini National Park cuts its own deep canyons through rock nearly 4 billion years old, plunge pools waiting at the bottom of every gorge. Marble Bar claims the title of Australia's hottest town, while Tom Price sits higher above sea level than anywhere else in the state. Old and new sit side by side, rarely bothering to explain themselves.
