Pormpuraaw Area

Pormpuraaw sits between two rivers on Queensland's west coast, and the water here does double duty, both a fishing ground and a conservation success story. The Edward River Croc Farm has run since the 1970s, established when crocodiles were becoming endangered, and it's since helped repopulate the rivers, which is why swimming in saltwater here isn't an option. Those same rivers offer excellent barramundi, threadfin salmon and grunter fishing, with reef fishing further offshore. Pormpuraaw is home to the Thaayorre and Mungkan peoples, and traditional practices, weaving, dot painting, spear making and canoe carving, are still very much alive.
