Quilpie Area

Home of the boulder opal, a stone found almost nowhere else

Out in Channel Country, where the Warrego Way meets the Natural Sciences Loop, Quilpie built its name on boulder opal, a rarer, ironstone-veined stone found in only a handful of places on Earth. Fossick for your own, then climb Baldy Top Lookout for a sunset that explains why people stay longer than planned. At the Shire Museum, recordings of early settlers like the Tully, Durack and Costello families tell the real story of flood, drought and isolation out here. Picnic and fish at the Bulloo River, or catch the wildflowers when the season's right. Out here, the ground gives up more than most people expect.
