Regional Council of Goyder

A copper boom that once made this the largest inland town in the country

Few places grew as fast, or as briefly, as this one did. Burra's 1840s copper boom turned it into one of the largest inland settlements in Australia, a history preserved today through the Heritage Passport Trail's self-guided access to old mines and cottages. Hallett carries a different kind of energy story, wind turbines lining the ridges where sheep once grazed alone. This council has quietly powered the state twice over, first with copper, now with wind.
