Roma carries its history openly, memorials and heritage buildings doing as much talking as the town itself. The Avenue of Heroes holds a bottle tree for every local soldier killed in the First World War, a living memorial still lining the main street. The Big Rig tells a different story, oil discovered here in the 1900s and marked now by a heritage derrick and light show after dark. Roma's saleyards rank among the largest cattle selling centres in the Southern Hemisphere, the genuine economic heart of the district. It's a town with more layers than the drive through suggests.
