Southern Highlands

Sydney's hill station, still cool after a century

Sydneysiders have been climbing to the Highlands to escape the heat since the 1800s, and the formula hasn't changed: cool air, deep green, and villages that seem arranged for strolling. Wander Berrima's Georgian streetscape, virtually intact since the 1830s, and pay respects at Bowral's Bradman Museum, cricket's great shrine. Then find the edge: Fitzroy Falls plunges eighty metres into Morton National Park's gorge country, and the Illawarra Fly walks you through the rainforest canopy thirty metres up. Gentle in the middle, wild at the rim.
