Northern Territory

Tennant Creek Area

Australia's last gold rush happened right here, in the 1930s

Tennant Creek earned its nickname, the Territory's heart of gold, the honest way, hosting the last true gold rush in Australian history well into the twentieth century. Battery Hill Mining Centre keeps that story running literally, home to the country's last operating ten-head gold stamp battery, still crushing ore on underground tours. A short drive out of town, Karlu Karlu's giant granite boulders balance across the plain as if waiting to topple, a genuine detour from the gold rush story. The gold might be gone, but the shine hasn't quite faded.
