Follow the river far enough west and the landscape around it changes completely, red gum forest giving way to salt pans and mallee scrub as the country dries out toward the South Australian border. Lake Tyrrell turns a genuine shade of pink most days, one of Victoria's strangest and most photographed natural sights. Mildura anchors the region with citrus groves rolling out where desert almost begins. Nothing out here looks quite like the river you left behind.
