The escarpment rises sheer and green right behind Wollongong, leaving barely a strip of flat land before the ocean takes over everything in front of it. Drive or cycle the Sea Cliff Bridge, a road built out over open water on its own pylons, then climb Mount Keira for a view that explains the whole geography in one look. In the foothills, the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, welcomes visitors into halls built for exactly that. Wander the Botanic Garden or the harbour breakwall for something gentler.
