Young

Cherry blossom in spring, buckets in December

Young's calendar revolves around its orchards: late spring turns the hills white with blossom, and come December, families fan out through the rows picking their own cherries by the bucketful. It's been the Cherry Capital of Australia for over a century. The town's older story is heavier: gold rushes here ended in the Lambing Flat riots of 1861, whose anti-Chinese violence shaped a young nation for the worse, and the Folk Museum tells that history straight, roll-up banner and all. Sweet season, hard history: Young offers both, honestly.
