Description

Bemboka “Village in a Valley” was originally settled as a halfway point between Bega and Cooma. Today, Bemboka is a quaint rural village with a backdrop of the South East Forests National Park towering over the township. Wander the main street and browse the cafes and eclectic local shops or head to the top of Brown Mountain where you can enjoy stunning scenic views of the whole Sapphire Coast from Pipers Lookout. The viewing platform and visitor information signage is an introduction to the wonders of the South East Forests National Park, where lyrebirds line the forest trails and wombats wander the lush rolling countryside. Bemboka has lots of history, with the first main settlers arriving in 1871, mainly a dairying community with a large number of butter factories in the town. The town ran its own newspaper called the Bemboka Advocate and the Mumbulla Shire Council had its first offices in the town. A telegraph station was situated at Brown Mountain and received its first telegraph in September of 1885. A pioneer walk has been established in the Bemboka Park honouring the pioneers of the district, and you can stop by the Bemboka River to look for platypus.
