Description

The heritage-listed Corfield and Fitzmaurice building, Winton’s first general store, opened in 1878 and served the community until 1987. Today, it houses Combo Crafts, offering handmade pottery, jewelry, and crafts, alongside a mini-museum showcasing one of Australia’s most extensive dinosaur fossil collections, curated by the Australian Age of Dinosaurs. This includes 'Elliot,' the largest dinosaur found in Australia, a 22-metre-long sauropod. The display offers a glimpse into the ancient environment and features bones from Elliot and other prehistoric creatures. The Dinosaur Diorama vividly recreates the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede, where small dinosaurs fled from a 10-metre carnivorous predator. The museum also highlights Winton’s history with exhibits on the wool industry, the opal mining industry at Opalton, and a display detailing the story of Corfield and Fitzmaurice's early years. The building itself, as Winton’s oldest business, is part of the story, preserved with a graphic panelled display. This site seamlessly blends the town’s pioneering past, dinosaur history, and local artistry, making it an essential stop for visitors.
