Description

Allow at least four days to travel the 1,400 kilometre Gunbarrel Highway, which is considered one of Australia's most challenging roads. The ‘highway’ extends from Wiluna in Western Australia, east to Yulara in the Northern Territory. This journey should only be undertaken by experienced adventurers who genuinely enjoy the trials and tribulations of traversing extremely harsh and remote desert tracks. Though there are many points of interest along the way such as the Giles Weather Station, Banjo Creek, Lasseter's Cave and the Docker River, it is the journey itself which is the most memorable experience. It is worth taking the time to climb to the top of Mount Beadell to appreciate the view and see the memorial erected in honour of Len Beadell. The highway is little more than a dirt track where you will encounter washaways, heavy corrugations, stone, sand and flood plains. Fuel and supplies are limited, permits are required, speak to the Department of Indigenous Affairs for details. You will need a sense of adventure, thorough preparation, a high clearance four wheel drive, emergency equipment and suitable communications gear. It is also recommended to travel in a convoy with other vehicles.
