St Matthew's Church

St Matthew’s Church, built in 1873, is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture located in the heart of Guildford. Known for its intricate brickwork, the church’s walls were carefully constructed with bricks laid alternately lengthwise and pointing inward to create a strong, lasting structure. This was the third attempt at building the church, demonstrating the builders' dedication to creating a building that would stand the test of time. The church is the only Garrison Church in Western Australia. During World War I, it served as the Garrison Church for the 10th Light Horse and Royal Australian Artillery. Its deep ties to both the local community and military are honoured through its listing on the State Heritage Register and the National Trust’s Classified Places. Inside, the church houses a magnificent pipe organ, installed in 1911 by J. E. Dodd and fully restored in 2004. St Matthew's Church is also a popular wedding venue. For those exploring Guildford, the church is featured on the Stirling Square Circuit, one of the town's four heritage walking trails.
