Description

Alexander Cameron (1810 - 1881), known widely as the King of Penola, is remembered as the district's first squatter and the town's founder. Alexander arrived from Scotland in 1844. His niece was Mary MacKillop. Alexander Cameron built the first shacks and the Royal Oak hotel in 1848. A life-size bronze statue commemorated Alexander Cameron by John Dowie, erected by public subscription on Church Street beside the Royal Oak Hotel.
