Description

Inverawe Native Gardens is located at Margate and at 9.5 hectare is the largest landscaped native Australian garden in Tasmania. It overlooks North-West Bay, with views down to North Bruny Island and back to Kunanyi/Mt Wellington. The garden is an experience, showcasing Australian plants in a landscaped setting. Inverawe features thousands of trees and colourful shrubs. There is always something in bloom. Kilometres of formed paths and many seats take advantage of the views. Visitors are met and introduced to the garden, given a coloured map and are free to wander. The Tea Terrace offers tea, coffee, and light refreshments. 110 bird species have been seen at Inverawe, including all 12 of Tasmania’s endemics. Poetry, whimsy, and explanatory signs enhance the experience. French explorers and early botanists were in the area, 220 years ago. Some of the plant species they named are in the collection. Inverawe Native Gardens is 15 minutes south of Hobart, on the Channel Highway. It is located next to the Margate Train. There is ample parking. Guided tours can be arranged.
