Warloch Ponds Road Bridge

Elsey Cemetry, Lot 5417, NT Portion 6773 (A) (2945 Roper Highway, Elsey), Roper River, Northern Territory, Australia, Elsey, Northern Territory, Australia, 0852 Arrow
The site consists of a single-lane steel and concrete structure spanning Elsey Creek on an old section of the Old Stuart Highway 18km south of Mataranka near the historic Elsey Cemetery and the Elsey Homestead Memorial Cairn. The Warloch Ponds Road Bridge is the longest one-lane road bridge of its type in the Northern Territory and is a good example of World War II heavy engineering. It reflects technical accomplishment and achievement particularly in view of its remote location. The bridge, one of seven of its type en-route to Darwin, has historic and engineering significance as a structure directly associated with development of the Stuart Highway, the military build-up in the Northern Territory and military control of the Darwin region during World War II. The bridge has also acquired historic significance through its association with road transport in the post war development of the Darwin and Katherine regions.
