Description

This four-day, 1,190-kilometre journey along the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail is the ultimate celebration of grit, gold dust and glorious outback spirit. It takes you through lush green hills and the sunny-hued heartland of the Wheatbelt and Goldfields, all the way to the brick-red soils and mammoth modern mines of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The scenery is particularly spectacular from mid-July to November when it glitters with wildflowers in all their technicolour glory. From Perth, head through the Wheatbelt to Merredin in time for a classic pub "parmi" and frothy beer. Around every corner of this quaint town, yesteryear echoes: the ornate theatre, town hall and museums dedicated to trains and army vehicles. Walk the woodland trails and hunt for orchids among a dazzling array of in-season wildflowers at Tamma Parkland and Totadgin Rock, a mini-me version of the famous Wave Rock. Follow the historical markers 334 kilometres along the pipeline to the gold-mining epicentre of Kalgoorlie, Australia’s largest outback town. Out here, stories of the town’s goldrush past are emblazoned along the stately streets, now home to character-filled pubs and modern galleries. The hunt for gold starts at the Museum of the Goldfields, where, unlike the other fortune-seekers who tried their luck, you’ll see the real thing. Know your eagle from your albatross? Tee off against the rugged backdrop at Nullarbor Links, the longest golf course on the planet. In Boulder, alongside museums and monuments, is the aptly named Super Pit. This golden wonder – a mind-blowing 3.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide – is still in operation, and it’s a blast from the lookout. Finish up with a serene sunset, viewed from atop Mt Charlotte.
