Description

From city-centre parks to coastal trails, witness a breathtaking carpet of colour as Western Australia’s wildflowers burst into exquisite bloom from August to October. Allow four days to complete this 400-kilometre trail, which leads to 10 dazzling flora-filled locations, all within a 55-kilometre radius of the state’s capital. In Perth, discover more than 1,700 native plant species at Kings Park and Botanic Garden before immersing yourself in the fragrant surrounds of Yanchep National Park’s woodlands and wetlands. Head to nearby Swan Valley, pack a picnic and follow the wildflower trails that crisscross Western Australia’s oldest wine region. Enter pristine bushland under the shade of the soaring marri and jarrah trees, stop to take in the beautiful banksias, and then admire the tropical plants that bask in the spray of Nobel Falls. From fiery grevilleas to spiny, rose-pink hakeas, prepare for an explosion of colour. Hike the Darling Ranges and pause for breath in John Forrest National Park, where the air is infused with the refreshing scent of eucalyptus. Wander walking paths lined with soaring myrtle and wattle, before continuing to the national parks and reserves of the picturesque Perth Hills area. Marvel at Mundaring Weir Dam, wander the petal-strewn woodland floor of Kalamunda National Park and revive weary feet with a dip in the natural pools at Lesmurdie Falls National Park. Emerge from the woodland and head to the coast. From Fremantle, a ferry leads to the island idyll of Rottnest, where indigenous plant species flourish amid the salt lakes and secluded bays, and quirky smiling quokkas make their home. All you have to do now is decide which of the island’s 63 white-sand beaches to call your own for the day.
