Great Kimberley Inland Track
Great Kimberley Inland Track
Intrepid travellers and outback dreamers: this journey through the Kimberley’s ancient culture and mesmerising landscapes is for you. Traverse the legendary Gibb River Road over five days in a four-wheel-drive adventure best experienced during the dry months, from June to early September.
Start your off-road adventure by flying from Perth, or any number of Australian cities, to Broome or the remote town of Kununurra. Either way, the route to Derby – the start of the Gibb River Road – is dotted with picture-perfect pitstops. As the sun reaches its highest point and shimmers above the region’s red landscape, a dip in the serene watering holes at Manning Gorge or the Gibb River crossing is the perfect antidote to the heat.
From your base at Drysdale River Station, drive out to the evocative surrounds of Mitchell River National Park for some bushwalking. Or take to the skies on a thrilling helicopter trip to get a bird’s-eye view of cascading waterfalls, stunning coastal canyons and the tropical rainforest that envelops Mitchell Plateau. As evening falls, toast marshmallows on the campfire – or your company over a fine red – and enjoy the spectacular celestial show. This far from city lights, the stars are out in full, mind-bending force.
Arriving at the northern tip of Western Australia, an atmospheric encounter awaits at the remote Aboriginal community of Kalumburu. Here, among the rugged landscape, rock art created thousands of years ago tells the story of an ancient culture. It’s also famous for being an amazing fishing spot. Join the local custodians and see if you can land the catch of the day.
Go on to explore the full length of the Gibb River Road, or journey home scrolling a camera roll full of iconic Kimberley landscapes.
Important: you will need an Uunguu Visitor Pass for the Mitchell Falls area of this itinerary and a community permit for the Kalumburu section. See https://www.australiasnorthwest.com/listing/permits-guides-%26-maps/261/ for more details.
