The real outback awaits on a 130 kilometre four day, driving getaway around Karijini National Park. A lush oasis among the Pilbara’s vast and undulating red-rust terrain, Karijini is an adventure-seeker’s dream. Plunge into tranquil pools, traverse billion-year-old gorges and toast marshmallows under the most dramatic night sky you’ve ever seen. From Perth, it’s a two-hour flight to either Paraburdoo or Newman where you can connect with a tour, or rent a car to venture into the park. Or, if you have time, hit the highway for a two-day drive and take in all the romance of the open road – June to September offers the most comfortable conditions for travelling. Take in the lay of the land – and get an initial taste of the region’s culture and history – at the fascinating Karijini Visitor Centre. Karijini is a highlight reel of mesmerising natural landscapes and Dale Gorge is a show-stopper. A clamber over the evocative red-rock terrain reveals cascading waterfalls, shady swimming holes and unforgettable vistas over Karijini. Work up a sweat on one of the walking trails before cooling down with a dip in Fern Pool or Circular Pool. Get off the beaten track at Weano Gorge. Descend into the centre of the earth, traverse its labyrinth of narrow gorges and view Karijini from every spectacular angle at the lookouts. Experience Karinji at its rugged best by exploring it on foot. You might get lucky and spot native wallabies or echidna peeking out from the bush. When it’s time to cool off, splash in the idyllic swimming holes of Hamersley, Hancock, Joffre and Kalamina gorges – it’s your adventure after all.
